Ep.7 - A Conversation With Lorena Germán -Her New Book, Why She is Hopeful, and How She is Doing it All

Unfortunately, I (Stephen) had to miss the first part of this conversation as my youngest was acting up a bit so the editing stage was actually the first time hearing much of this conversation for me. Sean Follin was able to move right along on his own for this episode — something that I think should happen more often but that is a story for another day. Now, onto this episode.

We were so fortunate to get the opportunity to sit down with Lorena for this conversation. Her framing and perspective on much of what we are working with in our present education systems was not only eye-opening but also motivating. As a teacher, I was motivated for this upcoming school year and to refine my own approaches as an educator.

To back up a bit, you may know Lorena from her work in Multicultural Classroom or from the recent #DistruptTexts movement — or maybe you know her from one of her other many projects (I have no idea how she does it all). Lorena has down so much work in and out of the classroom to push education reform in the direction that we all need it to go. She not only comes from a place of great passion in her teaching but also from a place of great authenticity. Her work and efforts are exactly what the Age of Awareness publication strives to amplify and highlight.

Not only was her laugh infectious but so was her hope. But Lorena isn’t just hoping for a better world in and out of the classroom, she is empowering countless educators with the tools needed to make these positive and authentic changes. This bring me to her new book coming out! Her book, “Textured Teaching: A Framework for Culturally Sustaining Practices” is open for pre-sale now and will be available in September. As a teacher, I do not know how she had the time to write a book while being so active in the education world.

We hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did and be sure to subscribe.
